Dr. Nabil Shaath, Member of the PLO Political Committee responsible for the Admission of Palestine to the United Nations and member of Fatah’s Central Committee welcomed the Honduran government’s support of Palestine’s UN bid as “a significant step towards peace and justice” saying that this step “further consolidates cooperation between Central America and the Arab world”.

“Recognizing the State of Palestine and supporting our admission at the United Nations is an investment in peace and secures the two-state solution, which Israel rejects by continuing the illegal construction of settlements, especially in Occupied East Jerusalem, and continuing its illegal blockade on Gaza”, said Shaath.

Dr. Shaath, who headed Palestinian diplomacy for over a decade and is a close advisor of President Mahmoud Abbas noted, “After waiting for so long, rays of hope are now shining upon our path to liberty. Supporting our diplomatic initiative is an opportunity for the world to demonstrate that non-violent resistance can produce tangible results.”

“In the past two years, Latin America has taken the moral lead by showing that Palestine can no longer be the exception to a world committed to universal human rights”, said Dr. Shaath. He added, “Only those investing in the perpetuation of occupation and violence are upset by the decision of countries like Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela and Chile among others to support and recognize Palestine. Meanwhile, this support is a cause for joy for those nations wanting to invest in peace and committed to having two states on the 1967 border living side by side free of oppression and brutality, working together for a prosperous future.”

One hundred and twenty-two countries now recognize the State of Palestine, including 9 of the 10 most populous countries in the world. This amounts to 75% of the world population.
