Hussein Al Sheikh was born into a refugee family in 1960 in Ramallah, Palestine. He grew up and progressed through various stages of political involvement within the Palestinian political arena, holding several senior positions. In June 2026, he was elected Vice Chairman of Fatah. In April 2025, he was appointment as Vice President of the State of Palestine and as Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, after the convention of the Central Council and the unanimous establishment of the position of Vice President of the State of Palestine. Prior to that he has served as Secretary-General of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) since May 2022 until April 2025.

Mr. Al Sheikh was elected a member of the Executive Committee and the Negotiations Affairs Department in February 2022. Prior, Al Sheikh served as the Head of the General Authority of Civil Affairs from 2007 to February 2025. He is also a member of the Palestinian National Dialogue and Reconciliation Committee and acted as head of the Palestinian side of the Tripartite Group for the Reconstruction of Gaza.  As the Head of the Negotiation Affairs Department, Mr. Al Sheikh is the chief negotiator in the Palestinian-Arab-American dialogue.

He was elected a member of the Fatah Central Committee for three consecutive terms: the first from 2009 to 2016 and the second from 2016 to 2026, and the third from 2026 to date. Additionally, Al Sheikh also served as Fatah's Secretary in the West Bank in 1999. Prior, Al Sheikh was detained in Israeli prisons for 11 years, between 1978 and 1989.

In his quest to end the Israeli occupation and establish an independent state of Palestine, Mr. Al Sheikh has participated in various regional and international conferences, aiming to revive the peace process and gain global recognition of the State of Palestine.

• June 2026 – Elected as Vice Chairman of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement "Fatah".
• May 2026 – Present: Elected member of the Fatah Central Committee (8th Fatah Convention).
• Following the convention of the Central Council on 24 April 2025, the position of Vice President of the State of Palestine was unanimously created, and Hussein Al Sheikh was appointed Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization and Vice President of the State of Palestine.
• 2022 – April 2025: Appointed Secretary General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization – Appointed Head of the Negotiations Affairs Department.
• 2022 Elected a member of the Executive Committee of the PLO.
• 2017 Member of the Palestinian National Dialogue Committee in the file of Reconciliation.
• 2016 – Present: Elected member of the Fatah Central Committee (7th Fatah Convention).
