MONTHLY SUMMARY OF ISRAELI VIOLATIONS

01 February 2023 – 28 February 2023

The following summary tables and overview of events survey hostile Israeli activities during the period 01 February 2022 to 28 February 2022. The report includes a summary table of events, classified by type, throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip, in addition to a comparative table surveying events over the past three months. The survey is compiled from the Daily Situation Reports of the Palestinian Monitoring Group (PMG) of the Negotiations Affairs Department (NAD) of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The PMG monitors ground conditions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including Israeli and Palestinian violations. The information reported through the PMG process represents data available at the time of distribution only. 

 

Sample of Israeli Violations during the Month of  February 2023

  • 02/03/2023:  the occupation forces stationed in the vicinity of the Hawara checkpoint, opened fire towards and killed a citizen: Abdullah Samih Ahmed Qalalwa, 26 years old – a resident of the village of Al-Jadida, Jenin Governorate .
  • 02/06/2023: the occupation forces fired live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas towards citizens for alleged stoning as they stormed raiding and searched a number of homes during the raid of Aqabat Jabr camp in the city of Jericho and as a result killed 5 citizens: Raafat Wael Awadat, 21 years old, Ibrahim Wael Awadat, 27 years old, Malik Awni Lafi, 22 years old, Adham Majdi Awadat, 22 years old, and Thaer Awadat, 28 years old were killed during clashes with the occupation forces in Aqabat Jabr camp, injured 6 other citizens (one of them seriously), and left 3 others citizens suffocated due to tear gas inhalation
  • 02/07/2023:  the occupation forces fired live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets, stun and tear gas canisters towards citizens for alleged stoning as they stormed several houses during the raid into the city of Nablus and as a result killed a child: Hamza Amjad Yousef Al-Ashqar, 17 years old.
  • 02/07/2023: the occupation forces fired live ammunition, rubber metal bullets , stun grenades, and rubber-metal bullets towards citizens for alleged stoning while they were accompanying a group of settlers to visit (Joseph's Tomb) during their raid into the city of Nablus, which resulted in the injury of 2 children (one of them is seriously injured).
  • 02/09/2023: a military vehicle of the occupation forces near Al-Jalama checkpoint ran over (intentionally) the citizen: Anas Fathi Abed, while he was driving a motorcycle, as a result left him hospitalised with contusions.
  • 02/09/2023: the occupation forces positioned near the Al-Fawar camp junction opened fire towards and killed a citizen: Sharif Hassan Mahmoud Rabaa, 22 years old - a resident of the town of Al-Dhahiriya, for allegedly attempting to stab a soldier.
  • 02/10/2023: the detainee: Ahmed Badr Abdullah Abu Ali, 48 years old, resident of Yatta, was killed, after his health condition deteriorated, as a result of deliberate medical negligence by the occupation prison administration.
  • 02/10/2023: The civilian: Hussein Khaled Qaraqe, 32 years old - a resident of the village of Al-Isawiya was killed after an Israeli settler opened fire towards him near the intersection of the village of Nabi Samuel.
  • 02/11/2023: A group of settlers stormed the agricultural lands belonging to residents in the Al-Nuwaitif area of Qarawat Bani Hassan town and opened fire towards them. As a result, Mithqal Suleiman Abdel Halim Rayan, a 27-year-old resident of the town, was killed, and two other citizens :Attia Assi and Muhammad Asi were injured.
  • 02/12/2023: the occupation forces fired live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas canisters towards citizens for alleged shooting and stoning and as a result killed a child:  Qusay Radwan Youssef Waked, 14 years old and injured 2 citizens (including 1 seriously injured): Muhammad Nabil Fawzi Al-Sabah (seriously wounded), and Mahmoud Nafeh Al-Saadi.
  • 02/13/2023: the citizen: Ismail Jamil Ismail Abu Al-Jamal - was injured in the town of Doha, as a result of being attacked by trained (police) dogs as the occupation forces' search of his house during their raid into the town of Doha.
  • 02/14/2023: the occupation forces fired live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas canisters towards citizens, under the pretext that they had been shot and thrown with stones and as a result killed a citizen:  Amir Ihab Bustami, 21 years old and injured 5 others.
  • 02/14/2023: the occupation forces fired live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas canisters at citizens who were allegedly throwing stones. As a result, Mahmoud Majed Muhammad Al-Aidi, a 17-year-old, was killed and two others, who are siblings (one of whom is a child), were injured when the forces stormed a number of houses during their raid into Al-Fara’a camp.
  • 02/14/2023: the citizen: Haroun Rasmi Yusef Abu Aram, 27 years old, died from the serious wounds he sustained on 01.01.2021while hospitalized at a government hospital in the town of Yatta, in the Al-Tuwani area, east of the town of Yatta.
  • 02/20/2023: the occupation forces reportedly fired live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas canisters towards citizens who were allegedly involved in shooting and stoning. Additionally, they fired several shells while surrounding a house and killed 11 citizens, including three elderly citizens and a child: Adnan Sabaa Baara (72 years old), Muhammad Khaled Anbousi (25 years old), Tamer Nimr Minawi (33 years old), Musab Munir Muhammad Awais (26 years old), Hussam Bassam Aslim (24 years old), Muhammad Abdel Fattah Abdel Ghani (23 years old), Walid Riyad Hussein Dakhil (23 years old), Abdel Hadi Abdel Aziz Ashqar (61 years old), Muhammad Farid Shaaban (16 years old), Jasser Jamil Abdel Wahhab Qanair (23 years old), and Anan Shawkat Enab (66 years old). In addition, 102 civilians were reportedly wounded, including seven who were seriously wounded and three journalists during their raid into the city of Nablus.
  • 02/22/2023: the citizen: Muhammad Sami Al-Abed Abu Al-Amreen, 33 years old – a resident of Jabalia camp, died of serious injuries he sustained during his participation in a demonstration near the border fence, east of the town of Jabalia, about two years ago.
  • 02/23/2023: the citizen: Muhammad Nabil Fawzi Al-Sabah, 29 years old, a resident of Jenin camp, died of his serious wounds that he sustained during clashes with the occupation forces in Jenin camp.
  • 02/23/2023: the occupation forces positioned located opposite Al-Arroub camp, fired live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades and tear gas canisters towards citizens for alleged stoning and as a result killed a Palestinian Police officer: Muhammad Ismail Hassan Al-Jawabra, 25 years old - residents of Al-Arroub camp as he was assisting his neighbours in the camp.
  • 02/26/2023: Israeli settlers stormed and attacked multiple locations including the eastern village of Laban, the town of Hawara, the villages of Burin, Asira al-Qibliya, Za'tara, and Yatma, as well as the al-Khan area, civilians and armed extremist settlers attacked their vehicles. The attacks led to the death of one person, injuries to more than 110 others, and extensive damage to property, including the burning of 31 homes and 21 vehicles, and the destruction of 2 car washes, a water tank, several greenhouses, barracks, and 4 animal pens. Additionally, a civil defense truck and 3 ambulance vehicles were assaulted and destroyed.

The clashes began when the occupation forces raided Nablus and used live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas against citizens while escorting a group of settlers visiting Joseph's Tomb.

Analysis of Events

Killings

A total of 31 residents were killed by Israeli forces during the month of February 2023 {30 in the West Bank and 1 in Gaza}.

Injuries

A total of 246 Palestinian injuries were reported in the month of February 2023 {240 in the West Bank and 6 in the Gaza Strip).

Including 14 children, 2 journalists and a woman.

Arrests

During the month of February 2022, the Israeli military arrested 539 Palestinians {530 in the West Bank and 9 in the Gaza Strip). The majority of arrests took place in the districts: 86 Jerusalem, 78 Ramallah, 58 Jenin, 10 Tubas, 29 Tulkarm, 18 Qalqiliya, 45 Nablus, 12 Salfit, 38 Jericho, 45 Bethlehem, 111 Hebron, 6 North Gaza, 1 Khan Yunis and 2 Rafah. Including:  20 Children, 9 Women,6 Fishermen and 6 Security Force Officer.

 

 

 

Closure

Especially on Fridays, the Israeli military continues to intensify restrictions at checkpoints located at the entrances of Jerusalem, and to restrict entrance to the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in the old city of Jerusalem, preventing worshippers from accessing the Mosque. At the Qalandiya checkpoint north of Jerusalem, the Israeli military continues to prevent PNA registered civilian vehicles from crossing the checkpoint towards Ar Ram and Qalandiya as well as Dahiyat al Bareed. The checkpoint is overcrowded daily, particularly during rush hours, due to intensified restrictions and search measures applied by Israeli troops. During the month of February 2023, the Israeli military also continued to intensify restrictions at the Tayasir checkpoint and Al Hamra junction checkpoint leading to the Jordan Valley area, only allowing access to civilians whose IDs indicate District of Jericho residence or others holding special access permits. In addition, restrictions were intensified and civilian access was obstructed at the Za’tara junction checkpoint (separating the northern and central West Bank districts) as well as at the As Sawahira ash Sharqiya (the ‘Container’) checkpoint (separating the central and southern West Bank districts).

The Israeli military installed 372 checkpoints in February 2023 (Compared with 442 checkpoints in January 2023 and 369 checkpoints in December 2022) as a result restricted the free access and movement of residents, merchant supplies and agricultural goods.

Raids

The Israeli military carried out a total of 544 raids in Palestinian residential areas during the month of  February 2023, including 542 in the West Bank and 2 in the Gaza Strip. The majority of Israeli military raids were reported to have taken place in the districts of Jerusalem (11); Ramallah (68); Jenin (95); Tubas (9), Tulkarem (39); Qalqiliya (34); Nablus (143); Salfit (35); Jericho (23); Bethlehem (40); Hebron (45) and  North Gaza (2)

A total of  278 attacks were reported to have taken place during the month of February  2023 (240  in the West Bank and 38 in the Gaza Strip) which included  34 from raids into Palestinian towns, villages and camps, 206 from positions at Military checkpoints,24  from positions at Military posts  and 14 from Naval vessels.

The Israeli occupation forces demolished 28 homes during February 2023 including:
