The following summary tables and overview of events survey hostile Israeli activities during the period 01 January 2023 to 31 January 2023. The report includes a summary table of events, classified by type, throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip, in addition to a comparative table surveying events over the past three months. The survey is compiled from the Daily Situation Reports of the Palestinian Monitoring Group (PMG) of the Negotiations Affairs Department (NAD) of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The PMG monitors ground conditions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including Israeli and Palestinian violations. The information reported through the PMG process represents data available at the time of distribution only.

  • 01/01/2023: the occupation forces fired live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas canisters towards citizens, as they were demolishing 3 apartments for the families of two martyrs in the village of Kafr Dan, and as a result killed 2 citizens:  Muhammad Samer Hoshiyeh, 21 years old – a resident of the town of Al-Yamoun, and Fouad Mahmoud Ahmed Abed, 19 years old – a resident of the village of Kafr Dan, and injured 6 other citizens (including 1 seriously injured)
  • 01/03/2023: the occupation forces fired live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades and tear gas canisters towards citizens for alleged stoning and shooting and as a result injured the civilian: Abdullah Masoud - residents of the northern town of Asira, Nablus Governorate during their raid into Jenin Camp.
  • 01/03/2023:  the occupation forces fired live ammunition and rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades and tear gas canisters towards citizens, killing a child: Adam Issam Shaker Ayyad, 16 years old and injuring another during their raid into Al-Duhaisha camp in Bethlehem.
  • 01/05/2023: the occupation forces fired live ammunition and rubber coated metal bullets, stun grenades and tear gas canisters towards citizens for alleged shooting and stoning during the raid into Balata camp in Nablus, while they were besieging and searching a house, and as a result killed a child: Amer Abu Zeitoun, 16 years old and the injured another citizen: Muhammad Hashash.
  • 01/06/2023: the occupation forces positioned near the village of Beit Dajan fired stun and tear gas canisters towards citizens participating in a demonstration against settler attacks and the confiscation of land in favor of settlement projects, and as a result left 10 citizens suffocated due to tear gas inhalation.
  • 01/07/2023: The civilian Suhaib Jamil Al-Ja'beh was admitted to the governmental hospital in the town of Dura, as a result of his bruises as a result of being severely beaten by the occupation forces near the "Ngohot" settlement.
  • 01/07/2023: the occupation forces fired stun grenades and tear gas at the citizens, in the Al-Ka'abneh - Al-Zuwaidin area, east of the town, as they tried to confront a settler after he installed 4 mobile homes (caravans) on an area of ​​​​10 dunums in an attempt to seize it. As a result, 2 civilians were wounded by stun grenades in the foot. They were subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment, and a number of civilians suffocated due to tear gas inhalation.
  • 01/07/2023: the occupation forces positioned near the entrance of the town of Beit Ummar fired live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas canisters towards demonstrating citizens who were demanding the recovery of the bodies of the martyrs, who were being held by the occupation forces for alleged stoning and as a result injured 2 citizens who were subsequently transferred to the government hospital in Hebron for treatment.
  • 01/09/2023: the occupation forces positioned near the entrance to the town of Silwad fired stun grenades and tear gas canisters towards school students after they left their schools, for alleged stoning and as a result left a number of them suffocated as a result of inhaling tear gas.
  • 01/11/2023: the occupation forces fired live ammunition and rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades and tear gas canisters towards citizens, for alleged shooting and stoning while they were besieging and storming a number of houses during their raid into the city of Nablus and the Balata camp in the city and as a result seriously injured a citizen: Ahmed Amer Salim Abu Junaid, 21 years old who later died as a result of his injuries.
  • 01/12/2023: a settler positioned near the "Havat Yehuda" settlement outpost, established near the town of Samu', opened fire towards and killed a civilian: Sanad Muhammad Othman Samamareh, 19 years old - a resident of the town of Al-Dhahiriya, under the pretext that he had stabbed a settler.
  • 01/12/2023: the occupation forces fired live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades and tear gas canisters towards citizens for, alleged stoning, as they surrounded and stormed a bakery, during their raid of the city of Nablus and as a result injured 10 citizens (including 2 journalists, and including 2 who were run over by an Occupation military vehicle): journalist - Nasser Shtayyeh, journalist - Hassan Qamhieh, Hassan Muhammad Saeed Hassan, Ali Bassam Ali, Fadi Jihad Hamdi Zagha, Ziyad Mahmoud Ziyad Suleiman, Nasser Suleiman Muhammad Shtayyeh, Muhammad Sami Musa Al-Dairi, Alaa Muhammad Khaled Kallab, Muhammad Salih Muhammad Jadallah.
  • 01/12/2023: the occupation forces fired live ammunition and rubber coated metal bullets, stun grenades and tear gas canisters towards citizens, under the pretext that they had been shot and thrown with stones, as they stormed a number of houses and as a result killed 2 citizens: Habib Muhammad Abdel Rahman Kamil, 25 years old, and Abdul Hadi Fakhri Youssef Nazzal, 19 years old  and injured 3 others during their raid into Qabatiya town.
  • 01/14/2023: the citizen: Yazan Samer Al-Ja'bari, 19 years old, resident of Al-Yamoun town, died of the serious wounds that he sustained during the occupation forces' raid into Kafr Dan village on 01/02/2023.
  • 01/14/2023: the occupation forces positioned near the entrance to the town of Jaba', opened fire at a vehicle carrying 2 citizens:  Izz El-Din Basem Hamamreh, 24 years old, and Amjad Adnan Khaliliya, 23 years old, and chased them to the neighboring village of Al-Fandqumiya, then opened fire at them again, killing them both.
  • 01/15/2023:  the occupation forces positioned near the western entrance to the town of Silwad opened fire towards a citizen: Ahmed Hassan Abdel-Jalil Kahla, 45 years old - a resident of the village of Ramoun , from point-blank range after a verbal argument with the occupation soldiers who were forcing him to get off his vehicle by force and as a result killed him.
  • 01/16/2023: the child: Omar Khaled Lutfi Al-Khamour, 14 years old, resident of Al-Duheisha camp, Bethlehem, died of his serious wounds, which he sustained during clashes with the occupation forces during their storming of the Dheisheh camp (as mentioned in the previous report).
  • 01/17/2023:  the occupation forces positioned near the junction of the Nabi Yunis area (on the main road, Hebron - Bethlehem), opened fire at a member of the civilian police: Hamdi Shaker Abdullah Abu Diyat al-Zama`ra, 40 years old, resident of the town of Halhul after stopping his vehicle, killing him and injuring 2 citizens (a citizen and his sister).
  • 01/17/2023:, the occupation forces fired live ammunition and rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades and tear gas canisters toward citizens during their raid of the city of Nablus, while they were accompanying a group of settlers during their visit (Joseph's Tomb), which resulted in the injury of 3 citizens (including a child and a citizen as a result of being run over by a military vehicle).
  • 01/19/2023: the occupation forces fired live ammunition and rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades and tear gas canisters towards citizens, for alleged shooting and stoning and as a result killed 2 citizens: Adham Muhammad Bassem Jabareen, 26 years old, and Jawad Farid Hussein Bawaqna, 58 years old and injured 3 others.
  • 01/21/2023: a settler in the Jabal Al-Raisan area, located near the village of Ras Karkar opened fire towards and killed a citizen: Tariq Odeh Youssef Maali 42 years old - a resident of the village of Kafr Nima.
  • 01/26/2023: the occupation forces fired a number of anti-tank shells, live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas canisters towards citizens, for alleged shooting and stoning and as a result killed 9 citizens (including an elderly woman): Saeb Essam Mahmoud Azriqi, 24 years old - resident of the city of Jenin, Izz al-Din Yassin Salahat 26 years old, Abdullah Marwan al-Ghoul 18 years old, Wasim Amjad Abu Jaas 19 years old (elderly) citizen - Magda Abdel-Fattah Mahmoud Obeid, 61 years old, resident of Jenin camp, Mutasem Mahmoud Ahmed Abu Al-Hassan, 37 years old, resident of Al-Yamoun town, Muhammad Mahmoud Sobh 30 years old, Muhammad Sami Ghoneim 34 years old, and his brother Noor 23 years old, residents of Burqin town and injured 20 others (including 4 seriously, and 2 children).
  • 01/25/2023: during their raid into Al-Salam suburb in the town of Anata, the occupation forces fired live ammunition and rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas canisters toward citizens for alleged stoning while they were demolishing the house of a martyr's family, and as a result killed a child:  Muhammad Ali Muhammad Ali, 17 years old and injured 3 other civilians, and also left a number of civilians suffocated due to tear gas inhalation.
  • 01/26/2023: the occupation forces positioned near the entrance to the town of Al-Ram fired live ammunition and rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas canisters towards demonstrating citizens for alleged stoning and as a result killed a citizen: Youssef Yahya Abdul Rakim Muhaisen, 22 years old  and injured another.
  • 01/26/2023: the child: Nayef Al-Awaidat, 13 years old, a resident of Nusseirat camp, died of his serious injuries sustained as a result of airstrikes during the occupations aggression on the Gaza Strip last year.
  • 01/27/2023: Khairy Musa Khairy Alqam 21 years old, resident of Ras al-Amud neighborhood in Jerusalem was killed as a result of being shot by the occupation forces in the "Nabi Yacoub" settlement established on the lands of the town of Beit Hanina (after he opened fire on a group of settlers before the entrance to a Jewish synagogue, which resulted in the killing and wounding of a number of settlers).
  • 01/27/2023: the child: Wadih Aziz Abu Ramoz, 16, a resident of the Silwan neighborhood of Jerusalem, died of the serious wounds that he sustained during clashes with the occupation forces in the Silwan neighborhood of Jerusalem (as mentioned in a report on 01/26/2023).
  • 01/29/2023: The civilian: Karm Ali Ahmed Salman, 18 years old, resident of Qusin village, Nablus governorate was killed after occupation forces opened fire towards him near the “Kedumim” settlement junction.
  • 01/29/2023: the citizen: Omar Tariq Ali Al-Saadi, 24 years old - a resident of Jenin camp, succumbed to the serious wounds that he sustained during the Israeli aggression against the city of Jenin and its camp (as mentioned in the report on 01/26/2023).

01/30/2023: The civilian: Nasim Nayef Salman Abu Fouda, 26 years old - a resident of Hebron was killed after occupation forces opened fire towards him near the vicinity of Checkpoint 160 in the Old City of Hebron.

  2.  On 01/12/2023, the occupation authorities in the city of Jerusalem issued a decision to renew the ban on the Governor of Jerusalem - Adnan Ghaith, from traveling and entering the rest of the West Bank governorates for a period of 6 months.

  • 1/5/2023:  the occupation forces demolished, , 5 residential tents housing 25 citizens, most of them children, in addition to 3 sheep farms owned by Mahmoud Malihat in east of the village of Duma.
  • 1/10/2023: the occupation forces demolished a house (consisting of two floors) in the town of Kafr Al-Dik, and filled a water-collecting well adjacent to the house, owned by the citizen: Ibrahim Muhammad Naji, under the pretext of not having a permit, and severely beat a citizen and as a result left him hospitalized with contusions.
  • 1/10/2023: the occupation forces demolished a house belonging to the citizen: Muhammad Ahmed Musa, the deceased, in the village of Ain Al-Dyouk Al-Tahta, under the pretext of not having a permit.
  • 1/11/2023: the occupation forces demolished a house (under construction) owned by the citizen: Azzam Abdel Aziz Jaber, in the Al-Baqaa area, east of Hebron, under the pretext of not having a permit.

  • 1/16/2023: the occupation forces demolished a residential room owned by a citizen of the Khader family in the town of Beit Hanina, under the pretext of not having a license.
  • 1/17/2023: the occupation forces demolished, a house (consisting of two floors), owned by the citizen: Omar Othman Sinokrot, in the village of Beit Safafa under the pretext of not having a permit.
  • 1/18/2023: the occupation forces demolished a 200-square-meter house in the Al-Farihat area, south of the town of Al-Ramadin, owned by the citizen: Yahya Abu Qweider, and the surrounding wall, and destroyed a mobile room and confiscated another, under the pretext of not having a license.

A total of 36 residents were killed by Israeli forces during the month of January 2023 {35 in the West Bank and 1 in Gaza} including:

  • 01/03/2023:  the occupation forces fired live ammunition and rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades and tear gas canisters towards citizens, killing a child: Adam Issam Shaker Ayyad, 16 years old and injuring another during their raid into Al-Duhaisha camp in Bethlehem.
  • 01/05/2023: the occupation forces fired live ammunition and rubber coated metal bullets, stun grenades and tear gas canisters towards citizens for alleged shooting and stoning during the raid into Balata camp in Nablus, while they were besieging and searching a house, and as a result killed a child: Amer Abu Zeitoun, 16 years old and the injured another citizen: Muhammad Hashash.
  • 01/16/2023: the child: Omar Khaled Lutfi Al-Khamour, 14 years old, resident of Al-Duheisha camp, Bethlehem, died of his serious wounds, which he sustained during clashes with the occupation forces during their storming of the Dheisheh camp (as mentioned in the previous report).

  • 01/25/2023: during their raid into Al-Salam suburb in the town of Anata, the occupation forces fired live ammunition and rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas canisters toward citizens for alleged stoning while they were demolishing the house of a martyr's family, and as a result killed a child:  Muhammad Ali Muhammad Ali, 17 years old and injured 3 other civilians, and also left a number of civilians suffocated due to tear gas inhalation.
  • 01/26/2023: the child: Nayef Al-Awaidat, 13 years old, a resident of Nusseirat camp, died of his serious injuries sustained as a result of airstrikes during the occupations aggression on the Gaza Strip last year.

A total of 164 injuries were reported in the month of January 2023 {164 Palestinians in the West Bank and 0 in the Gaza Strip).

Arrests

During the month of January 2023, the Israeli military arrested 576 Palestinians {576 in the West Bank and 0 in the Gaza Strip). The majority of arrests took place in the districts: 179 Jerusalem, 64 Ramallah, 57 Jenin, 15 Tubas, 21 Tulkarm, 15 Qalqiliya, 43 Nablus, 20 Salfit, 22 Jericho, 41 Bethlehem and 96 Hebron. Including:  43 Children, 5 Women,1 University Student, 1 Journalist and 7 Security Force Officer.

Closure

Especially on Fridays, the Israeli military continues to intensify restrictions at checkpoints located at the entrances of Jerusalem, and to restrict entrance to the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in the old city of Jerusalem, preventing worshippers from accessing the Mosque. At the Qalandiya checkpoint north of Jerusalem, the Israeli military continues to prevent PNA registered civilian vehicles from crossing the checkpoint towards Ar Ram and Qalandiya as well as Dahiyat al Bareed. The checkpoint is overcrowded daily, particularly during rush hours, due to intensified restrictions and search measures applied by Israeli troops. During the month of January 2023, the Israeli military also continued to intensify restrictions at the Tayasir checkpoint and Al Hamra junction checkpoint leading to the Jordan Valley area, only allowing access to civilians whose IDs indicate District of Jericho residence or others holding special access permits. In addition, restrictions were intensified and civilian access was obstructed at the Za’tara junction checkpoint (separating the northern and central West Bank districts) as well as at the As Sawahira ash Sharqiya (the ‘Container’) checkpoint (separating the central and southern West Bank districts).

The Israeli military installed checkpoints 442 in the month of  January 2023 (Compared with 369 checkpoints in December 2022  and 386 checkpoints in November 2022 and) as a result restricted the free access and movement of residents, merchant supplies and agricultural goods.

The Israeli military set up  Flying checkpoints 442 in the month of  January 2023 and searched Palestinian civilians and vehicles in and around Palestinian residential areas in the districts of Jerusalem (10); Ramallah (159); Jenin (4), Tubas (2), Tulkarem (1),  Qalqiliya (53); Nablus (41); Salfit (24); Jericho (13); Bethlehem (21)and Hebron (41).

 

 

Raids

The Israeli military carried out a total of 735 raids in Palestinian residential areas during the month of January 2023, including 537 in the West Bank and 7 in the Gaza Strip. The majority of Israeli military raids were reported to have taken place in the districts of Jerusalem (20); Ramallah (64); Jenin (116); Tubas (7), Tulkarem (23); Qalqiliya (48); Nablus (92); Salfit (33); Jericho (12); Bethlehem (44); Hebron (78), North Gaza (1), Gaza (4) Central Gaza (1) and Rafah (1).

A total of  391 attacks were reported to have taken place during the month of January 2023 (316  in the West Bank and 75 in the Gaza Strip) which included  248 from positions at Military checkpoints,68 from raids into Palestinian towns, villages and camps,56  from positions at Military posts and 19 from Naval vessels.

  • 1/3/2023: the occupation forces demolished a house owned by the citizen: Hamad Issa Younis Muhammad in the Tal Ma'in area, east of the town of Yatta, under the pretext of not having a permit.
  • 1/3/2023: the occupation forces demolished 4 houses belonging to the citizens: Younis Ahmed Saleh Jabarin, Khaled Khalil Jabarin, Muhammad Ahmed Saleh Jabarin, and Othman Muhammad Jabarin, in the Shaab Al-Batem area, east of the town of Yatta, under the pretext of not having a permit.
  • 1/4/2023: the occupation authorities demolished a house belonging to the citizen: Muhammad Ahmad Asi Al-Awar, in the Silwan neighborhood of Jerusalem, under the pretext of not having a license.
  • 1/5/2023:  the occupation forces demolished, , 5 residential tents housing 25 citizens, most of them children, in addition to 3 sheep farms owned by Mahmoud Malihat in east of the village of Duma.
  • 1/10/2023: the occupation forces demolished a house (consisting of two floors) in the town of Kafr Al-Dik, and filled a water-collecting well adjacent to the house, owned by the citizen: Ibrahim Muhammad Naji, under the pretext of not having a permit, and severely beat a citizen and as a result left him hospitalized with contusions.
  • 1/10/2023: the occupation forces demolished a house belonging to the citizen: Muhammad Ahmed Musa, the deceased, in the village of Ain Al-Dyouk Al-Tahta, under the pretext of not having a permit.

  • 1/11/2023:  the occupation forces installed a fence surroundings the vicinity of a church with a mosaic floor from the Byzantine era that was discovered months ago,in the Khirbet Allan area in the village of Al-Jiftlik and carried out archaeological excavations in the area.
  • 1/15/2023: the occupation forces closed the municipal waste dump site in the town of Al-Zawiya, and prevented the municipality crews from emptying the waste inside it.
  • 1/15/2023: the occupation forces uprooted trees in the Al-Hamra land in the neighborhood, which was seized by settlers at the end of last month, in the Silwan neighborhood of Jerusalem.

  • 1/04/2023: the occupation forces demolished an agricultural room and a well for collecting water in the Al-Khalil area in the village of Al-Mughair, and uprooted 250 olive seedlings on agricultural land owned by the two citizens: Akram Al-Naasan and Uday Abu Alia, under the pretext that it is located in the classified area (C) under Israeli control.
  • 1/11/2023: the occupation forces demolished, a livestock den (barracks) for sheep in the Ain Samia area, east of the village of Kafr Malik.

Jenin:

  • 1/01/2023:  the occupation forces demolished wall surrounding a plot of land in the village of Ain Al-Dyouk Al-Fawqa, a, under the pretext of not having a permit.
  • 1/10/2023: the occupation forces demolished a commercial establishment owned by the citizen: Mukhlad Abdel Karim Nujoom located along the main street in the town of Al-Auja, under the pretext of not having a license.
