MONTHLY SUMMARY OF ISRAELI VIOLATIONS

01 May 2016 – 30 May 2016

The following summary tables and overview of events survey hostile Israeli activities during the period 01 May 2016 to 30 May 2016. The report includes a summary table of events, classified by type, throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip, in addition to a comparative table surveying events over the past three months. The survey is compiled from the Daily Situation Reports of the Palestinian Monitoring Group (PMG) of the Negotiations Affairs Department (NAD) of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The PMG monitors ground conditions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including Israeli and Palestinian violations. The PMG Daily Situation Reports are a survey of daily events collated from information provided by civil ministries and security agencies of the Palestinian National Authority. The information reported through the PMG process represents data available at the time of distribution only. 

Sample of Israeli Violations during the Month of May 2016

  • May 2nd 2016: An Israeli Settler vehicle travelling along the main roads n Al-Oja village ran over the child: Fathi  Samer Waleed (12 years old) and as a result left him hospitalized with contusions.
  • May 3rd 2016: Israeli forces raided Al-Khader town, clashed with several school children and as a result injured the child: Mohammad Ibrahim Salah (16 years old) then withdrew at 14:10.
  • May 3rd 2016: Ahmad Riyad Mahmoud Shihadeh (36 years old) {a resident of Beituniya town} was killed after Israeli forces positioned at a flying checkpoint located near Ein Arik village junction opened fire towards him.
  • May 5th 2016: Israeli tank fire towards east Rafah city killed Ayisheh Atiya Al-Amour (55 years old).
  • May 11th 2016: Israeli forces raided Kafr Aqab village and Qalandiya camp, clashed with several school children as they stormed a home and as a result injured 2 residents including a child who was critically injured {both residents of Kafr Aqab}: Zakariya Al-Ajlouni (15 years old) {Critically injured} and Nidal Haniya and then detained a Medical Doctor in Kafr Aqab village then withdrew at 11:10.
  • May 16th 2016: Israeli forces positioned in the vicinity of “Pesagout” settlement located in the east area of Al-Bireh city fired rubber coated steel bullets, stun and tear gas grenades towards several residents for alleged stoning and as a result injured the child Ameer Faraj Shafiq (16 years old) and temporarily detained 3 children: Mohammad Abdallah Al-Aqah (16 years old), Mohammad Mahmoud Al-Nubani (16 years old) and Abdel-Azziz Ali Othman Zied (16 years old).
  • May 20th 2016: Israeli forces positioned near the entrance of Al-Jalazoun camp fired rubber coated steel bullets; stun and tear gas grenades towards several residents for alleged stoning and as a result injured the child Ayham Hamidat (14 years old).
  • May 23rd 2016:  The child Sawsan Ali Daoud Mansour (17 years old) {a resident of Biddu town} was killed after Israeli forces opened fire towards her near Beit Iksa checkpoint.
  • May 25th 2016: The child Adam Raed  Odah Hamarah (4 years old) was hospitalized with contusions after he was struck by an Israeli settler’s vehicle near Husan village.
  • May 27th 2016: Israeli forces positioned in the vicinity of Billal Bin Rabah mosque located in North Bethlehem opened fire towards Fadi Issa Attiq (14 years old) and as a result wounded his leg.

  • During the month of May 2016, the Israeli military demolished Palestinian homes and residential tents, which consisted of the following: 
  • The Israeli Military forced Mohammad Yunis Abu Taya to demolish portion of his home {consisting of a Kitchen and a Bathroom} located in Silwan neighborhood in Jerusalem city and imposed a financial penalty for allegedly being built without a license.
  • Israeli forces stormed Jabal Al Baba area located in east Al-Eizariya town uninstalled and demolished 12 Caravans used as housing by approximately 70 Bedouin residents and owned by :Abdallah Mazar’a, Mohammad Hassan Mazar’a, Hassan Mohammad Mazar’a, Ahmad Mohammad Jahalin, Mahmoud Mohammad Jahalin, Hussien Mazar’a, Adnan Khamis Mazar’a, Mariam Hussien Mazar’a, Fadi Mazar’a, Salem Mazar’a, Fatima Hassan Mazar’a and Hussien Suliman Mazar’a then proceeded to confiscate the remains of the Caravans which were Donated by the European Union.
  •  On the Morning of May 17th 2016, Israeli forces stormed Al-Suwana neighborhood in Jerusalem city and demolished 2 homes owned by The Tutah family for allegedly being built without a license.
  • Israeli forces stormed Shu’fat neighborhood in Jerusalem and demolished a home owned by Rajeh Al-Hawarin Al-Saber for allegedly being built without a license.
  • Israeli forces demolished 2 homes in Al-Masrara neighborhood in Jerusalem city.
  • Israeli forces demolished a home {under construction} in Al-Walaja village in Bethlehem district.
  • Israeli forces demolished the inner concrete walls inside an apartment owned by a Palestinian Detainees family in Nablus city.

During the month of May  2016 the Israeli Military served the following Demolition orders:

  • Israeli forces served a military order for the demolition of a of 10 homes {Den and tents} in Bardala village located in the North Jordan valley in Tubas District.
  • Israeli forces served a military order for the demolition of a  2 homes in Bardala village located in the North Jordan valley in Tubas District.

COMPARISON OF KILLINGS, INJURIES AND ARRESTS OVER THE PAST 3 MONTHS

 

Analysis of Events

Killings: A total of 3 killings were reported in the month of May 2016 including :

  • The child Sawsan Ali Daoud Mansour (17 years old) {A resident of Biddu town} was killed after Israeli forces opened fire towards her near Beit Iksa checkpoint.
  • Israeli tank fire towards east Rafah city killed Ayishah Atiya Al-Amour (55 years old).

Arrests

During the month of May 2016, the Israeli military arrested 389 Palestinians (365the West Bank and 24 in the Gaza Strip). The majority of arrests took place in the districts of Jerusalem (73); Ramallah (58); Jenin (18); Tubas (2) Tulkarem (17); Qalqiliya (16); Nablus (41); Salfit (18); Jericho (13); Bethlehem (53); Hebron (56). North Gaza (20), Gaza (1), Central Gaza (2) and Khan Yunis (1). Closure

Especially on Fridays, the Israeli military continues to intensify restrictions at checkpoints located at the entrances of Jerusalem, and to restrict entrance to the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in the old city of Jerusalem, preventing worshipers from accessing the Mosque. At the Qalandiya checkpoint north of Jerusalem, the Israeli military continues to prevent PNA registered civilian vehicles from crossing the checkpoint towards Ar Ram and Qalandiya as well as Dahiyat al Bareed. The checkpoint is overcrowded daily, particularly during rush hours, due to intensified restrictions and search measures applied by Israeli troops. During the month of January the Israeli military also continued to intensify restrictions at the Tayasir checkpoint and Al Hamra junction checkpoint leading to the Jordan Valley area, only allowing access to civilians whose IDs indicate District of Jericho residence or others holding special access permits. In addition, restrictions were intensified and civilian access was obstructed at the Za’tara junction checkpoint (separating the northern and central West Bank districts) as well as at the As Sawahira ash Sharqiya (the ‘Container’) checkpoint (separating the central and southern West Bank districts).

The Israeli military installed 399 flying checkpoints in May 2016 (compared with 442 in April and 527 in March) and as a result restricted the free access and movement of residents, merchant supplies and agricultural goods.

The Israeli military set up 399 flying checkpoints in May 2016 and searched Palestinian civilians and vehicles in and around Palestinian residential areas in the districts of Jerusalem (62); Ramallah (69); Jenin (13); Tubas (4) ; Tulkarem (9); Qalqiliya (32); Nablus (43); Salfit (28); Jericho (43); Bethlehem (62) and Hebron (34).

Raids

The Israeli military carried out a total of 411 raids in Palestinian residential areas during the month of May 2016, including 397 in the West Bank and 14 in the Gaza Strip. The majority of Israeli military raids were reported to have taken place in the districts of Jerusalem (49); Ramallah (56); Jenin (15); Tubas (9) Tulkarem (27); Qalqiliya (23); Nablus (54); Salfit (28); Jericho (6); Bethlehem (75); Hebron (56). North Gaza (6), Gaza (2), Central Gaza (2), Khan Yunis (2) and Rafah (4).

The Israeli military opened fire on 122 occasions during raids and clashes with civilians. (A total of 46% of attacks).

Attacks

A total of 265 attacks were reported to have taken place during the month of May 2016 (125 in the West Bank and 140 in the Gaza Strip).

The Israeli military carried out 116 attacks during confrontations between the Israeli military and Palestinians, 82 attacks from Israeli military posts on civilian homes and property, 7 during raids, 15 from airstrikes and 2 from Military checkpoints towards Palestinian residents and vehicle. In addition, Israeli navy vessels carried out 43 attacks on Palestinian fishermen and territory.

 

                                                                                                                                       

Attacks  on residential areas in West Bank districts

Home Demolition

During the month of May 2016, the Israeli military demolished Palestinian homes and residential tents, which consisted of the following:     

  • Israeli forces obliged a resident to demolish a section of his home {consisting of a Bath room and a kitchen} in Ein Al-Louz area in Silwan neighborhood in Jerusalem city and forced him to pay a financial penalty for allegedly being built without a license.
  • Israeli forces demolished a home in Shu’fat neighborhood in Jerusalem city.
  •  Israeli forces demolished uninstalled and demolished 12 mobile homes used to house Bedouin families in Jabal Al-Baba area located in east Al-Eizariya town.
  • Israeli forces demolished 2 homes in Al-Masara neighborhood in Jerusalem city.
  • Israeli forces demolished a home {under construction} in Al-Walaja village in Bethlehem district.
  • Israeli forces demolished the interior walls of an Apartment {owned by the family of a Palestinian detainee} in Nablus city.

During the month of May 2016 the Israeli Military served the following Demolition orders:

  • Israeli force served military orders for the demolition of 10 homes in Bardala village located in the North Jordan valley area in Tubas District.
  • Israeli forces served military orders for the demolition of 2 homes in Bardala village located in the North Jordan valley area in Tubas District.
  • Israeli forces served a military order for the demolition of a home in Al-Eisawiya village in Jerusalem district.
  • Israeli forces served a military order for the demolition of 5 homes in Khilat Ijmi’ area near Al-Aqaba village in Tubas district.

  During the Month of May 2016 Israeli forces occupied 6 homes and converted their rooftops into military posts in the following districts in the West Bank:

  • Nablus District: In Huwara town  

Attacks on Public and Private Property

A total of 85 incidents of destruction and confiscation of Palestinian public and private property by Israeli settlers and Israeli forces were reported in May 2016 (69 in the West Bank and 16 in the Gaza Strip).

Attack on Public and Private property occurred as follows per District:

Jerusalem: Israeli forces demolished the foundations of a home{under construction} and a concrete fence in  Al-Eisawiya village, Israeli settlers set fire to several Olive trees in the west area of Beit Anan village, Israeli forces obliged a resident to demolish 3  storage rooms {built of concrete with Aluminum rooftop} in Ein Al-Louz area in Silwan neighborhood.

Ramallah: Israeli forces damaged a vehicle near Um Safa village.

Tubas:  Israeli forces set fire to 40 dunums {10 acres} of agricultural land as they were conducting military training in Um Al-Quba area in Wadi Malah.

Qalqiliya: Israeli forces set fire to 30 Olive trees after firing stun and tear gas grenades during confrontations in Kfr Qaddum village and uprooted 40 Olive trees as they levelled a plot of agricultural land near “Qaddumim” settlement located in the east area of Kafr Qaddum village.

Nablus: Israeli forces damaged home furniture in in Askar camp and Israeli settlers set fire to Olive trees in Einbus village and the Israeli Military levelled A Sewage Treatment Plant in Beita town and prevented residents from dumping raw sewage into the collection plant.

Salfit: Israeli settlers damaged a vehicle after stoning several residents and vehicles travelling along Wadi Qana road near Immanuel settlement

Bethlehem: Israeli forces demolished the outer walls of a Girls Secondary school in Al-Khader Town.

North Gaza: Israeli Naval vessels opened fire towards and damaged a fishing boat off the shores of North Gaza.

Gaza : Israeli Airstrikes destroyed a steel mill.

During the month of May 2016 the Israeli Military served the following Military Orders for the following properties:

  •        Israeli forces served military orders to halt construction on a Den and the paving of a road in Khirbeit Al-Taweel area located in Aqraba town in Nablus District.
  •        Israeli forces served military orders to halt construction on the paving of an agricultural road in Duma village in Nablus District.
  •        Israeli forces served military orders to 43 families  to leave their homes for a period of 12 hours per day {from May 30th , May 31st and June 1st 2016} for alleged military training in Hamsah, Hamamat Malah, Al-Tayma and Al-Burj area’s which are located in the North Jordan valley area in Tubas district.
  •        Israeli forces served military orders to 12 families to leave their homes from 06:00 until 21:00 on May 30th 2016 and from 06:00 until 17:00 on May 31st 2016 and from 06:00 until 16:00 June 1st 2016 for alleged military training in Al-Ras Al-Hamra area located in the North Jordan valley area in Tubas district.
  •        Israeli forces served military orders to halt construction on 5 homes in Duma village in Nablus District.
  •        Israeli forces served military orders for the demolition of 4 water wells and 3 agricultural Dens located in the east area of Qusra village in Nablus district.
  •        Israeli forces served military orders for the demolition of several livestock dens in Bardala village located North Jordan valley area in Tubas district.
  •        Israeli forces served military orders for the demolition of 4 Water Tanks used for livestock irrigation located in Beit Ummar town in Hebron District.
  •        Israeli forces served military orders for the demolition of 2 Storage rooms located near the entrance of Izbit Al-Tabib village in Qalqiliya District.
  •        Israeli forces served military orders to halt construction a water well projects located in Khliat Ijmi’ area located near Al-Aqaba village in Tubas district.
  •        Israeli forces served military orders to halt construction of 3 homes in Al-Jiftlik village in Jericho district.
  •        Israeli forces served military orders to halt construction of a home in Al-Jawiya village located in south east Yatt town in Hebron district.
  •        Israeli forces served military orders to halt construction 10 home {under constriction} in Al-Walja village in Bethlehem district
  •        Israeli forces served military orders to halt construction on a water well and a several Dens in Al-Bariya area near Teqou’ town in Bethlehem district.

Confiscation of Property

Jerusalem: Israeli forces dismantled and confiscated 12 caravans used to house several Bedouin families in Jabal Al-Baba area located in Al-Eizariya town, confiscated a computer in Abu Dis town, surveillance camera footage from a merchant shop in Hizma village, several computers from a school in Sur Baher village, construction equipment in Silwan neighborhood.

Jenin: Israeli forces confiscated 12 tractors and agricultural pesticide spraying machines and a ploughing rail in Masila village.

Tubas: Israeli forces confiscated a tractor, a bulldozers and an agricultural land fertilizer in Al-Ras Al-Ahmar village located in the North Jordan Valley.

Tulkarem: Israeli forces confiscated a computer from a resident’s home as they stormed it in Sayda village.

Nablus: Israeli forces confiscated a computer and a cellular telephone in Nablus city, confiscated a computer and a cellular telephone from a home in Beit Dajjan village.

.Bethlehem: Israeli forces confiscated printing supplies and equipment owned by Hassan Adel Faraj after storming his print shop during their raid into Bethlehem city, Israeli forces surveillance camera footage from a merchant shop in Al-Khader town

Hebron: Israeli forces confiscated construction equipment from a home in Al-Jawiya village located in east Yatta town, a resident’s vehicle in Al-Shiyoukh town, a vehicle and a cellular telephone and surveillance camera footage from a home in Sa’ir town.

North Gaza:  Israeli Naval vessels confiscated 10 fishing boats off the shores of North Gaza.

 Settlement Activity:

36 incidents of Settler violence occurred during the month of May 2016 including:

Jerusalem: Israeli settlers set fire to agricultural land and the assaulted of two citizens in the west area of Beit Anan village, Israeli settlers occupied a home (3-storey) in Saadia neighborhood in the old city of Jerusalem, Israeli settlers occupied a home owned by the family of Zaloom in Alqurma neighborhood in the old city of Jerusalem, A Israeli settler attacked a resident with a sharp object near Al-Nabi Samual village .

Ramallah: Israeli settlers stormed agricultural land in Beitin village, a group of settlers levelled a plot of land in an attempt to build a fish pond in Ein Al-Zarqa area located between Deir Ghassaneh and Abboud town.

 Jenin: A group of settlers stormed into the area of “Tarsal” settlement {previously abandoned} and performed Talmudic rituals in place as it chanted slogans hostile to the Arabs.

Qalqilya:A Settler Security guard detained a resident near the entrance of Qaddumim settlement.

 Nablus: Israeli settler stormed Nablus city in an attempt to enter (Joseph's Tomb), set fire to a number of olive trees owned by residents in  Aanbos village , a group of settlers stormed Khirbet Yanoun village  which is located in southeast of  Beit Furik town,  two Israeli  settlers armed with a pistol stormed agricultural land on the outskirts of Talfeet village , stormed Palestinian agricultural land in Khirbet Tana village, a group of settlers stopped Palestinian civilian car and detained those inside at gunpoint on the bypass road passing  near "Yitzhar" settlement, a group of settlers stole  three heads of live stock (sheep) in Ifkham area located in east   Aqraba  town.

 Salfit: A group of settlers  stormed into Palestinian agricultural land in Harris village, located near "Revava" settlement,  and Israeli settlers threw stones at passing cars travelling on the road of Wadi Qana.

Jericho:   Israeli settler vehicles ran over 2 residents near Jiftlik village, razed agricultural land approximately 700 m from "Vered Jericho" settlement junction south of the city of Jericho and an Israeli settler vehicle ran over a child near Al-Oja village

Bethlehem: Israeli settlers stoned residents and vehicles near "Kfar Etzion" settlement junction, a settler ran over a child while he was driving his vehicle near Husan village, a group of settlers stormed the village of Heb Al-Thib village and pitched a tent in the area between the villages of Wadi Rahhal and Jouret Al-Sham’a villages.

Hebron: A group of Israeli settlers stoned several residents near Shuhada Street in the old city of  Hebron, a group of Israeli settlers stormed 2 homes in Shuhada Street in the old city of  Hebron, attacked a home and assaulted a child in the Tel Rumeida neighborhood, Israeli settlers attacked a residents home in Jaber neighborhood in the old city of Hebron then directed racial insults towards  the  residents of the house and threatened to kill them, a group of settlers launched tear gas canisters towards citizens in Abu Judeh  area  located near the town of Beit Ummar.

 Closure of Crossing Points

The Israeli military completely closed crossing points into the Gaza Strip, including access points within the Green Line, on 168 occasions during the month of May 2016. The Israeli military closed crossing points within the Green Line on 106 occasions. It opened Beit Hanun (Erez) Crossing for 27 days for previously-coordinated humanitarian cases and foreign nationals and Karm Abu Salem (Karem Shalom) Crossing for 22 days for transportation of food supplies, humanitarian aid, and cooking gas. In addition to allowing in animal feed, construction cargo designated for UNRWA and internationally-funded projects was transported through the Crossing. Sufa Crossing was closed throughout the month. On the other hand, the Israeli authorities have continued to unilaterally close Ash Shuja’iya (Nahal ‘Oz) Crossing. Beginning on 02 March 2011, the Israeli authorities has also continued to completely close Al Muntar (Karnei) Commercial Crossing.

 

The Israeli military closed international crossing points on 62 occasions. Rafah Crossing closed all the month. Yasser Arafat International Airport has remained closed since the outbreak of the second Intifada.
