The following summary tables and overview of events survey hostile Israeli activities during the period 01 January 2016 to 31 January 2016. The report includes a summary table of events, classified by type, throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip, in addition to a comparative table surveying events over the past three months. The survey is compiled from the Daily Situation Reports of the Palestinian Monitoring Group (PMG) of the Negotiations Affairs Department (NAD) of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The PMG monitors ground conditions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including Israeli and Palestinian violations. The information reported through the PMG process represents data available at the time of distribution only.

  • 5 January: Ahmad Yunis Kawazbah (17 years old){A resident of Sa’ir} was killed after Israeli forces positioned near “Kafr Itsiyon” settlement junction opened fire towards him for allegedly stabbing a Israeli settler {As alleged by the Israeli Military}.
  • 7 January: the child Khalil Mohammad Issa Shaladeh (16 years old) {A resident of Sa’ir} was  killed after Israeli forces opened fire towards him for allegedly attempting to stab a Israeli soldier near Beit Anoun village junction {As alleged by the Israeli Military}.
  • 7 January: 3 residents: Ala Abd Mohammad Kawazbah (20 years old), Muhanad Ziyad Mohammad Kawazbeh (20 years old)  and Ahmad Salem Kawazbeh (21 years old)  were killed after Israeli forces opened fire towards  near “Kafr Itsiyon settlement junction for allegedly attempting to stab Israeli soldiers.
  • 9 January: 2 residents: Sa’eed Judat Saleem Abu Al-Wafa (A resident of Al-Zawiya area in Jenin) and Ali Mohammad Aqab Abu Mariya (A resident of Al-Jidaydeh village in Jenin) after Israeli forces positioned at Al-Hamra checkpoint  opened fire towards them for allegedly attempting to stab a Israeli soldier (As alleged by the Israeli Military).
  • 12 January: Israeli forces opened fire towards and killed the residents: Sarour Ahmad Ibrahim Sarour (21 years old) {A resident of Ayda camp}as well as injuring 3 residents: Tarik Ziyad Abdallah{Critical injuries}, Billal Ahmad Mahmoud Jabour{Critical injuries} and Aziz Abu Sarour.
  • 12 January: 2 residents including a child: Adnan Ayad Hamad Al-Mashni (17 years old){A resident of Al-Shiyoukh town} and Mohammad Ahmad Qawazba (23 years old){A resident of Sa’ir}  were killed after Israeli forces opened fire towards them  for allegedly attempting to stab a Israeli soldier near Beit Einoun village junction {As alleged by the Israeli Military}.
  • 13 January: Israeli fighter jets launched missiles towards several residents in North Beit Lahiya and as a result killed Musa Assad Abu Za’tar (31 years old).

 

  • 14 January: Haytham Mahmoud Abd Al-Khalil Yassin (36 years old){A resident of Assira Al-Shimaliya} was killed after Israeli forces opened fire towards him for allegedly attempting to stab a Israeli soldier at a flying checkpoint located in the area between Nablus and Assira Al-Shimaliya (As alleged by the Israeli Military).

 

  • 14 January: Mo’ayad Awni Mohammad Jabarin (20 years old) {A resident of Sa’ir} was killed after Israeli forces opened fire towards him for allegedly attempting to stab a Israeli soldier near Beit Anoun village junction {As alleged by the Israeli Military}.
  • 15 January: Israeli forces positioned behind the Green Line opened fire towards several residents in east Al-Buriej camp as they were protesting against Israeli assault on Al-Aqsa mosque compound and against Palestinian citizens and as a result injured killed 2 residents: Mohammad Adel Abu Zied (18 years old) {A resident of Al-Buriej camp} and Mohammad Majdi Qutiya (26 years old){A resident of Khan Yunis} and  injured 2 other  and left several others suffocated from tear gas inhalation.
  • 17 January: Wissam Marwan Qasrawi (21 years old){A resident of Masaliya village in Jenin} was killed after Israeli forces opened fire towards him for allegedly attempting to stab a Israeli soldier (As alleged by the Israeli Military).
  • 18 January: Khalil Musa  Zuhier Amran (19 years old) was killed after a Israeli settler vehicle travelling along Abar Al-Samarah road located at the entrance of Al-Zawiya rammed  him.
  • 23 January: the child Ruqaya Eid Abu Eid (14 years old) {A resident of Anata} was killed after Israeli forces positioned near “Anatot” military base located in east Anata in Jerusalem {for allegedly attempting to stab a Israeli soldier as allegedly by the Israeli Military}.
  • 25 January: 2 residents: Hussein Mahmoud Abu Ghosh (17 years old) {A resident of Qalandiya camp in Jerusalem} and Ibrahim Osama Yusef Allan (23 years old) {A resident of Beit Ur Al-Tahta village in Ramallah} were killed after Israeli forces opened fire towards them near “ Mevo Horaon” settlement located in west Ramallah for allegedly stabbing a Israeli Settler {As alleged by the Israeli Military}.
  • 31 January: Amjad Jaser Awad Abu Amr (32 years old){A resident of Jama’in village in Nablus}{A Palestinian Police Force officer} was killed  after Israeli forces positioned near Al-Mahakma checkpoint opened fire towards him  after he allegedly opened fire towards 3 Israeli soldiers positioned at the checkpoint which injured 3 Israeli soldiers {As allegedly by the Israeli Military}.

Killings: A total of 21 killings were reported in the month of January 2016 (18 in the West Bank and 3 in the Gaza Strip)

Injuries

A total of 178 injuries were reported in the month of January 2016 (125 Palestinians in the West Bank and 53 in the Gaza Strip). Injuries included 19 children, a Woman, a journalist and a Paramedic.

Arrests

During the month of January 2016, the Israeli military arrested 486 Palestinians (478 the West Bank and 8 in the Gaza Strip). The majority of arrests took place in the districts of Jerusalem (109); Ramallah (53); Jenin (35); Tubas (6) Tulkarem (35); Qalqiliya (12); Nablus (38); Salfit (21); Jericho (20); Bethlehem (51); Hebron (98). North Gaza (7) and  Central Gaza (1). Among those arrested by the Israeli military were: 58 children, 5 women, 9 Security officers, 9 University Students, 3 Journalists, 6 fishermen and 2 PLC Members.

Israeli forces temporarily detained 315 residents at checkpoint and in residential area including 35 children, 13 Women (including a journalist) and 13 Security Force Officers.

 

Closure

Especially on Fridays, the Israeli military continues to intensify restrictions at checkpoints located at the entrances of Jerusalem, and to restrict entrance to the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in the old city of Jerusalem, preventing worshippers from accessing the Mosque. At the Qalandiya checkpoint north of Jerusalem, the Israeli military continues to prevent PNA registered civilian vehicles from crossing the checkpoint towards Ar Ram and Qalandiya as well as Dahiyat al Bareed. The checkpoint is overcrowded daily, particularly during rush hours, due to intensified restrictions and search measures applied by Israeli troops. During the month of January the Israeli military also continued to intensify restrictions at the Tayasir checkpoint and Al Hamra junction checkpoint leading to the Jordan Valley area, only allowing access to civilians whose IDs indicate District of Jericho residence or others holding special access permits. In addition, restrictions were intensified and civilian access was obstructed at the Za’tara junction checkpoint (separating the northern and central West Bank districts) as well as at the As Sawahira ash Sharqiya (the ‘Container’) checkpoint (separating the central and southern West Bank districts).

The Israeli military installed 514 flying checkpoints in January (compared with 623 in December and 691 in November) and as a result restricted the free access and movement of residents, merchant supplies and agricultural goods.

  During the Month of January 2016 Israeli forces occupied 7 homes  and converted their rooftops into military posts in the following districts in the West Bank:

  • Jenin District: Ya’bad town. 
  • Nablus District: Huwara town and Odala village.
  • Hebron District: Hebron city and Al-Aroub camp.

 Attacks on Public and Private Property

A total of 116 incidents of destruction and confiscation of Palestinian public and private property by Israeli settlers and Israeli forces were reported in January 2016 (112 in the West Bank and 4 in the Gaza Strip).

Attack on Public and Private property occurred as follows per District:

Jerusalem: Israeli forces smashed a computer in the College of Islamic Law studies in Al-Quds University in Abu Dis, prevented the hosting of a Cultural event in the Palestinian National Theatre for Arts, prevented the hosting of a Media briefing to be held at a local hotel to discuss the Israeli Military threats towards several local associations, damaged several sets of furniture inside a local coffee shop in Hizma village, demolished construction work (on the expansion of a room) for a restaurant in Beit Safafa village, Israeli forces demolished a livestock den in Abu Nuwar area in Jabal Baba mount located in easr Al-Eizariya and Israeli settlers set fire to 8 vehicles in Al-Thuri neighbourhood.

Ramallah: Israeli forces punctured the tires of a vehicle after they opened fire towards it in Beitin village, levelled agricultural crops on a plot of land approximately 15 Dunum, demolished a livestock shed approximately 70m2, demolished a storage room used as a vehicle repair garage and another room used to sell spare automobile parts in Khirbithat Al-Misbah village, Israeli forces exploded open several merchant shops using explosives as they stormed and searched them in Jalazoun camp.

Jenin: Israeli settlers chopped down 10 Olive and Almond trees in Arraba village, Israeli forces damaged a main door entrance as they stormed and searched a home in Ya’bad and shattered the windshield of a vehicle at a flying checkpoint near Arraba junction.

Tubas: , Israeli forces stormed Ibziq village located in the North Jordan valley area and forcibly removed 11 families from their home in order to conduct military exercises in the area from 14:00 until 21:00 on January 26th 2016 ,Israeli forces stormed Ras Al Hamra area located in the North Jordan valley area and forcibly removed 10 families from their home in order to conduct military exercises in the area from 15:00 until 24:00 on January 26th 2016 and demolished 2 barracks’ {dens} and a water well in Einoun area located in east Tubas.

Nablus: Israeli forced prevented several residents and farmers from accessing their farm land located near the main road connecting Aqraba and Yanoun, Israeli forces dismantled a mobile home on a plot of land after confiscating the plot and demolished a poultry farm in Qusra village and prevented residents from accessing their agricultural land in located in the area between Aqraba and Majdal Bani Fadel village.

Qalqiliya: Israeli forces set fire to a set of furniture after a tear gas grenades canister fired into a home exploded during confrontations in Jayous.

Salfit: Israeli settlers damaged a vehicle after stoning several residents and vehicles travelling along Wadi Qana road near Immanuel settlement and Israeli settlers shattered the windows of a bus after stoning residents and vehicles near Za’tara checkpoint.

Bethlehem: Israeli forces broke down the doors of several University students Dormitory rooms in Abu Nujeim village, Israeli forces shattered the front windshield of an Ambulance after firing rubber coated steel bullets towards Emergency medical staff during confrontations in in Al-Khader and damaged a residents vehicle after firing live ammunition towards it in Beit Jalla village.

Hebron: Israeli forces broke down the main entrance of a home and damaged furniture as they stormed and searched a home in Yatta village, demolished a poultry farm, demolished concrete fence and levelled Olive trees and grape vines in Khilit Abu Suda located near Beit Al-Baraka near Al-Aroub camp and demolished several barracks in Al-Rohat village located in south Al-Thahriya

North Gaza: Israeli Naval vessels opened fire towards and damaged a fishing boat off the shores of North Gaza.

Khan Yunis: Israeli Naval vessels opened fire towards and damaged a fishing boat off the shores of Khan Yunis.

 

Israeli Forces served the following military orders in January 2016:

  • Israeli forces served Military orders for the removal of water tanks from a plot of agricultural land in Beit Ummar in Hebron District.
  • Israeli forces served a military order for the demolition of a water well network {under construction} in Kardala village in Tubas district.
  • Israeli forces served a military order to halt construction on 2 homes in Beit Ummar in Hebron.
  • Israeli forces served a military order for the demolition of 2 Barack’s {Sheds} in Beit Liqya in Ramallah & Al-Bireh District.
  • Israeli forces served a military order to halt construction on 3 homes as they stormed Beitin and Ein Yabroud villages in Ramallah & Al-Bireh District.
  • Israeli forces served military orders for the removal of 9 families from their homes in Ibziq village which is located in the North Jordan valley area in Tubas district on January 27th 2016 for alleged military training in the area.
  • Israeli forces served military orders for the demolition of a Water Well in Bardala village located in Tubas District.
  • Israeli forces served military orders for the removal of 2 families from their homes in Al-Ras Al-Ahmar area located in the North Jordan valley area located in Tubas district for alleged military exercises.
  • Israeli forces served military orders to halt construction on a water well in Um Faqrat area located in south east Yatta in nHebron district.
  • Israeli forces served military orders for the demolition of 4 livestock sheds {Barackes} in Khirbiet Ein Al-Rashash area located near Duma village in Nablus district.

Confiscation of Property

Jerusalem: Israeli forces confiscated a Television set and several Electronic home appliances after storming and searching a home in Wadi Al-Joz neighbourhood, confiscated a computer from the Al-Quds University campus in Abu Dis and confiscated a vehicle after detaining its owner in Al-Eizariya

Ramallah: Israeli forces confiscated school bags from several school children along the bypass road located near “Bet El” settlement.

Jenin: Israeli forces confiscated 2 rental vehicles in Barta’a village, a computer and a cellular telephone from a home in Ya’bad and an agricultural tractor in Deir Abu Da’if village.

Tubas: Israeli forces confiscated 3 tractors and 3 trucks as they were conducting construction work on a agricultural road in Ein Bayda village.

Tulkarem: Israeli forces confiscated surveillance camera footage from a weeding re4ception hall and a home in Tulkarem city.

Nablus: Israeli forces confiscated several farming tools from farmers as they were on their agricultural land in the area located between Aqraba and Majdal Bani Fadel village confiscated a tractor from a resident in Huwara.

Jericho: Israeli forces confiscated a Motorcycle from a resident in Jericho city after detaining him.

Bethlehem: Israeli forces confiscated surveillance camera footage tapes from 2 homes in Beit Jallah city, another surveillance camera footage tapes from a gas station in Bethlehem city and 4 surveillance camera footage tapes a Currency exchange shop and 2 other merchant shops in Beit Jallah, a tractor while paving a road in Shoyahat area located in Nihalin village, surveillance camera footage tapes from a merchant shop in Al-Aza camp.

Hebron: Israeli forces confiscated digging equipment from Um Faqra area located in south east Yatta and a container containing a concrete mixer and several construction equipment in Beit Ummar.

  • Settlement Activity:

Israeli Authorities approved tenders for the confiscation of 40 dunum along road (60) near Al-Aroub camp leading to “Ghush Itsiyon” settlement for the purpose of settlement expansion in southern Hebron.

Israeli forces issued a military order for the confiscation of a plot of land (approximately 500 m2) near Harmish settlement located in Jenin along the main road connecting Jenin and Tulkarem for alleged military purposes.

Israeli forces issued plans for the confiscation of 1514 dunum of land in the area near “Al-Mog” settlement located in south Jericho and turning it into State owned property to be used for settlement construction.

Israeli forces stormed Beit Ola  and levelled a plot of land {15 dunum} located near the wall gate and uprooted and destroyed agricultural crops on 70 m2 of land and also demolished a water well owned by Khaled Mahmoud Aqel.

Israeli forces installed a barbed wire fence 15km in length along the main road near Yanoun village junction and Awarta village junction in Nablus district.

  • Settler Violence

39 incidents of Settler violence occurred during the month of January 2016 including:

Jerusalem: Israeli settlers assaulted several residents near Bab Al-Amoud area, set fire to 8 vehicles in Al-Thori neighbourhood, punctured 6 holes into the walls of a home in Aqbat Al-Khalidiya area located in the old city of Jerusalem.

Ramallah: An Israeli settler vehicle ran over a resident near Ni’lin military checkpoint.

Jenin: Israeli settlers up rooted 10 Olive trees in Araba, stoned residents and vehicles, assaulted a taxi driver and punctured the tires of several vehicles after placing steel spike along the main road connecting Jenin and Tulkarem.

 Tulkarem: Israeli settlers from “Avnei Hafetz” settlement planted trees on a plot of land in Shufa village and levelled a plot of agricultural land in Shufa village.

Nablus: Israeli settlers assaulted several residents  at a local park located in east Huwara, stoned homes in Al-Laban Al-Sharqiya village, assaulted  several residents near Huwara checkpoint, Israeli settlers riding motorcycles stormed Karm Al-Hayik area  located in Beit Furiq, placed a Molotov cocktail fire bomb and a hand death threat in front of a residents home  in Beit Furiq.

Qalqiliya: An Israeli settler opened fire towards a vehicle in Al-Nabi Eliyas village and Israeli settlers excavated a religious site in Al-Nabi Eliyas village.

Salfit:  A group of Israeli settler’s prevented several farmers from entering their agricultural land located near Kafr Al-Dik and stoned several residents and vehicles passing through Za’tara junction checkpoint, a Israeli settler vehicle ran over 2 residents {killing one residents and critically injuring the other} near Abar Al-Samaara road, a Israeli settler opened fire towards several homes located near the west entrance of Deir Istiya.

Jericho: Israeli settlers seized an agricultural tractor near Fasayil village.

Hebron: Israeli settlers opened fire in Al-Kasarat area located in the south area of Hebron city, attacked several merchant shops, and stormed two homes located near Al-Ibrahimi mosque in the old city of Hebron in an attempt to seize them.

  • Closure of Crossing Points

The Israeli military completely closed crossing points into the Gaza Strip, including access points within the Green Line, on 168 occasions during the month of January. The Israeli military closed crossing points within the Green Line on 106 occasions. It opened Beit Hanun (Erez) Crossing for 26 days for previously-coordinated humanitarian cases and foreign nationals and Karm Abu Salem (Karem Shalom) Crossing for 23 days for transportation of food supplies, humanitarian aid, and cooking gas. In addition to allowing in animal feed, construction cargo designated for UNRWA and internationally-funded projects was transported through the Crossing. Sufa Crossing was closed throughout the month. On the other hand, the Israeli authorities have continued to unilaterally close Ash Shuja’iya (Nahal ‘Oz) Crossing. Beginning on 02 March 2011, the Israeli authorities has also continued to completely close Al Muntar (Karnei) Commercial Crossing.

The Israeli military closed international crossing points on 62 occasions. Rafah Crossing was closed; Yasser Arafat International Airport has remained closed since the outbreak of the second Intifada.
